Runway
Runway Gen-4.5 sets the bar for cinematic AI video quality and character consistency, but its credit system is punishing, a Standard plan gives roughly five 10-second clips per month, and failed generations charge full price.
Pika
Pika turned meme physics into a product category. Its Pikaffects, inflate, melt, explode, cake-ify, generated 520 million TikTok views in one week. For social content it is fast and cheap. For anything cinematic, it hits its ceiling fast.
What each tool does best
Each tool's own feature breakdown, pulled from their dedicated review pages.
Runway
Text-to-Video (Gen-4.5)
. Generate clips up to 10 seconds from a text prompt. Gen-4.5 is the current flagship, ranking first on independent benchmarks. Costs approximately 25 credits per second.
Image-to-Video (Gen-4.5)
. Use a first-frame image as a visual anchor for generation. Launched January 21, 2026. Maintains scene composition and color grading from the source image through the full clip.
Act-Two performance capture
. Record a performance on a webcam (face, head, hands, full body) and transfer it to any AI-generated character. Launched July 2025. Replaces motion-capture hardware for dialogue-heavy and character-driven scenes.
Aleph video editing
. Modify existing generated footage via text prompt: add or remove objects, change lighting or weather, generate alternate camera angles from a single shot. Maintains temporal consistency across all frames without full regeneration.
Multi-Motion Brush
. Mask distinct regions of a frame and assign different motion behaviors to each, enabling parallax-style depth and layered scene motion that a single motion setting cannot achieve.
Camera Control (Gen-3)
. Explicit pan, dolly, arc, and keyframe camera control parameters. Available on Gen-3 Alpha and Gen-3 Alpha Turbo. Gen-4 and Gen-4.5 use prompt-guided camera direction instead.
Lip Sync
. Audio-driven character animation supporting multi-character dialogue. Works with custom voice inputs on Pro and above.
Third-party model access
. As of February 2026, Kling 3.0, Sora 2 Pro, and GPT-Image-1.5 are accessible within the Runway platform. Credits apply to third-party model usage.
Frames (keyframe interpolation)
. Define start and end frames and let Runway generate the motion between them. Useful for controlled transitions where prompt-only generation produces inconsistent results.
Pika
Pikaffects
. One-tap physics transformations applied to any photo or video clip: Inflate, Melt, Explode, Squish, Crush, Cake-ify, plus seasonal variants including Levitate, Eye Pop, and Decapitate. The only feature class with no direct competitor equivalent across Runway, Veo 3, Kling, or Luma. Generates 5-second loops optimized for TikTok and Reels. Available on all plans including free.
Scene Ingredients
. Multi-element composition from uploaded reference images. Upload a character, an object, and a background; Pika assembles them into a coherent composite scene with automatic handling of lighting, scale, and spatial positioning. Introduced in Pika 2.0 (December 2024) as a tool for brand consistency work without a production crew.
Pikaframes
. Keyframe-driven interpolation. Upload a starting image and an ending image; Pika generates the transition between them. Duration options from 5 seconds up to 25 seconds. Requires Standard plan or above. The most filmmaker-adjacent tool in Pika's feature set, comparable to Runway's image-to-video for keyframe control at a lower plan cost.
Pikadditions
. Object insertion into existing video clips. Describe or upload an object; Pika handles motion tracking, lighting, and depth to integrate it into the source clip. Limited to 5-second source clips. Introduced in Pika 2.1.
Pikaswaps
. Element replacement in existing video. Swap a character's outfit, substitute a product, or change a background while preserving motion and lighting coherence. Available on paid plans.
Image-to-Video
. Animate any still photograph with motion specified by text prompt or camera direction. Achieves an 89% first-try success rate for straightforward animation prompts, the highest-reliability generation type in Pika's toolkit. Supports 480p (free) or up to 1080p (paid).
Text-to-Video
. Generate video clips from text prompts alone, without a source image. Pika 2.5 improved prompt adherence over the 2.2 model, but text-only generation remains more variable than image-based generation. Best suited to abstract, atmospheric, or product-free scenes rather than character-specific or narrative content.
Lip Sync (ElevenLabs partnership)
. Synchronize spoken audio with character mouth movements in AI-generated video. Available on Pro plan and above. Built in partnership with ElevenLabs, launched February 2024. Supports custom audio input or text-to-speech via the integration.
Auto Sound Effects
. Pika 2.5 generates matching sound effects automatically based on the visual content of each clip, a crunch for a collision, a splash for liquid, ambient environment sounds for outdoor scenes. No native dialogue or music generation; sound effects only.
Pika Social App
. A separate iOS application (launched July 2025) built on an audio-driven human video model. Upload a selfie, type a creative prompt, and the model generates a complete video with choreography, background, and music. PikaMemes converts a selfie plus emoji into a loopable GIF. Generation speed under six seconds for HD output. Separate from the professional web product at pika.art and targets consumer social media creators rather than brand production teams.
