ChatGPT

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s consumer and team conversational platform for text, code, images, voice, and agent-style workflows. As of September 2026 it routes GPT-5.6 Luna on Free, adds Go at about $8/month, and gates Sol / Sol Pro reasoning behind Plus and Pro, while the API prices Sol, Terra, and Luna separately per million tokens.

Claude

Claude consistently produces cleaner prose and more precise code than most competitors, but rate limits hit harder here than anywhere else in the market. Here is the full picture, including the incidents Anthropic would rather you forgot.

What each tool does best

Each tool's own feature breakdown, pulled from their dedicated review pages.

ChatGPT

GPT-5 Access

Generates text and code using the newest reasoning model, limited by dynamic usage caps during high traffic.

DALL-E 3

Creates 1024x1024 resolution images from text prompts, restricted to a specific number of generations per hour.

Advanced Data Analysis

Executes Python code to visualize datasets, constrained by a strict 512MB file upload size limit.

GPT Store

Offers 3 million custom versions of the assistant, limited by the creator's prompt engineering skills.

Voice Mode

Processes spoken audio with low latency and emotional inflection, capped by a daily minute allowance.

Vision

Analyzes multiple uploaded images for OCR tasks, restricted by the visual reasoning accuracy of the model.

SearchGPT

Pulls web results with cited sources, limited by the indexing speed of the underlying search provider.

Memory

Saves user preferences across conversations, constrained by the total token count allocated to persistent storage.

File Uploads

Processes PDFs and spreadsheets, limited to a maximum of 512MB per individual file.

Claude

Projects

Persistent workspaces where uploaded files, custom instructions, and conversation history survive across multiple sessions. Claude retains the context of documents you have shared and instructions you have set without requiring you to re-paste them at the start of each conversation. Available on all tiers including free as of March 2026.

Artifacts

Live-rendered outputs displayed in a side panel alongside chat. Claude can produce working HTML pages, React components, SVG graphics, Mermaid diagrams, and interactive tools like calculators or data visualizations. The October 2025 update introduced inline text replacement for artifact edits, changes apply in place rather than regenerating the full artifact, making iteration 3-4x faster.

Claude Code

A terminal-based agentic coding tool, generally available since May 2025 with VS Code and JetBrains IDE integrations and GitHub integration. Claude Code reads existing codebases, performs multi-file edits, runs tests, iterates autonomously, and handles pull request preparation. Included on Pro ($20/month) and Max tiers. Token consumption in complex agentic sessions can be substantial, plan for 50,000 to 300,000 tokens per long session.

Extended Thinking

A reasoning mode where Claude works through a problem in a visible scratchpad before responding. Available on Opus and Sonnet models in both chat and API. On GPQA Diamond graduate-level reasoning benchmarks, extended thinking lifted Claude 3.7 Sonnet's score from 68% to 84.8%. Best used for complex multi-step reasoning, technical problem analysis, and tasks where a plausible-sounding wrong answer would be worse than a slower correct one.

MCP (Model Context Protocol)

An open standard Anthropic released in late 2024 enabling Claude Desktop to connect to external tools via one-click Desktop Extensions. Supported integrations as of April 2026 include Google Drive, Slack, GitHub, Notion, and a growing library of community-built servers. An MCP connector for the Messages API entered public beta in January 2026, enabling API developers to route Claude to remote MCP-compatible data sources without manual context injection.

Computer Use

An agent mode enabling Claude to control a browser and desktop to complete multi-step tasks autonomously, navigating websites, filling forms, extracting information, and interacting with applications. Available in Claude.ai agent mode on paid plans and through the API. Primarily used for workflow automation tasks that would otherwise require scripting.

File Uploads and Document Analysis

Claude accepts PDFs, Word documents, Excel files, images, and code files as inputs within a single prompt. The 200,000-token standard context window processes approximately 500 pages in one pass. For API users, the context window extends to 1 million tokens in beta, enabling full-codebase analysis and very large document sets without chunking or retrieval workarounds.

Web Search

Integrated web search allows Claude to look up current information as part of a response. Available on Pro and above. Unlike Perplexity's citation-first approach, Claude's web search is embedded within the conversational response rather than presented as a separate research layer.
