Claude for Outlook Not Working? Every Fix, in Order (2026)

You installed the Claude add-in, it worked for a while, and now the button is gone. Or it never appeared at all. Or it keeps throwing you back to a sign-in screen. You are not doing anything wrong: the Claude add-ins for Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint are new, Outlook is still in beta, and the failure modes are real but fixable. This guide collects every documented fix and puts them in the order that resolves the most cases first, so you can stop guessing.

If you have not installed the add-in yet, start with our Claude for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook setup guide and come back here only if something breaks.

Start here: which failure are you seeing?

Symptom

Most likely cause

Jump to

No Claude button anywhere in the app

Unsupported Office version, or the add-in is hidden

Fix 1

"Unable to install" from AppSource

Version gate or store access disabled by your admin

Fix 2

Worked yesterday, gone today

Add-in cache, or a service-side outage

Fix 3

Endless sign-in loop or "session expired"

Known OAuth bug on Anthropic's side, or token expiry

Fix 4

"You don't have permission to use this add-in"

Tenant policy, or the documented May 2026 outage pattern

Fix 5

Add-in loads but Claude never responds

Free plan, usage limits, or unsupported file type

Fix 6

Fix 1: the Claude button is not showing up at all

Three causes account for almost every "missing button" report, and the first one is the most common by far.

Check your Office version first

The Claude add-ins have hard minimum version requirements, and perpetual-license Office 2016 and 2019 are not supported at all. If you are below these thresholds, nothing else in this guide will help until you update:

App

Windows (Microsoft 365)

Mac

Web

Not supported

Excel

Build 16.0.13127.20296 or later

16.46 or later

Yes

Office 2016/2019, Android (iPad works from 2.51)

PowerPoint

Build 16.0.13127.20296 or later

16.46 or later

Office 2016/2019, iPad, Android

Word

Build 15202.10000 or later (v2205+)

16.61 or later

Office 2016/2019, iPad, Android

Outlook

New and classic Outlook with a Microsoft 365 subscription

Microsoft 365 subscription

Yes

Outlook 2016/2019, Outlook mobile apps, on-prem Exchange

To check your build on Windows, open any Office app and go to File, then Account, then About. Update through the same Account screen if you are behind.

The add-in is installed but hidden

Office sometimes installs an add-in without surfacing its button. Go to Insert (or Home in some builds), then My Add-ins, and click Refresh. If Claude appears under "Manage My Add-ins," it was installed all along and just needed to be re-pinned to the ribbon.

You are in the EU, EFTA or the UK on a work account

This one is widely missed: since Microsoft's December 2025 policy change, Claude integration is enabled by default for Microsoft 365 commercial tenants everywhere except the EU, EFTA and the UK, where it is off by default because Anthropic sits outside Microsoft's EU Data Boundary commitment. If you are on a European work tenant, your admin has to consciously opt in before you will ever see the add-in. Send them the request in Fix 5.

Fix 2: "Unable to install" or AppSource errors

When the AppSource listing itself refuses to install, work through these in order:

  • Version gate. The single most common cause on Microsoft's own Q&A forums is simply being below the minimum build. Verify against the table above before anything else.

  • Wrong account type. Make sure you are signed into the Office app with the same account you intend to use. Personal accounts install from the public store; work accounts may be routed through admin-managed deployment.

  • Store access disabled. Many organizations disable Office Store access entirely. In that case no store install will ever work: your admin deploys Claude centrally from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under Settings, then Integrated apps, or uploads Anthropic's manifest XML directly. Individual installs take minutes; org-wide assignment can take up to 24 hours to propagate.

Fix 3: it worked yesterday and disappeared today

Before reinstalling anything, do the two cheap steps: My Add-ins, then Refresh (as in Fix 1), and a full quit and restart of the Office app. If the add-in reappears under Manage My Add-ins, re-pin it and you are done.

If it is genuinely gone, check whether it is you or the service. There is precedent for service-side breakage: from May 29 to June 1, 2026, desktop Excel users saw a "you don't have permission to use this add-in" error that no amount of cache clearing, sign-outs or reinstalls could fix, because the fault was on the service side and was resolved by a Microsoft fix with no user action required. The lesson: if the add-in broke suddenly without you changing anything, search the Microsoft Q&A forum for the exact error text before spending an hour on local fixes. If dozens of people reported it the same day, wait it out.

Fix 4: stuck in a sign-in loop

Two very different problems produce the same symptom here.

The known OAuth bug. Some Excel and PowerPoint users hit a hard error naming a redirect URI (the error text mentions "pivot.claude.ai/auth/callback is not supported by client"). This is a server-side configuration issue in Anthropic's OAuth setup, and it is not user-fixable. No local setting will resolve it: report it through Anthropic's support and wait for a fix. This bug class is a big part of why the Excel and PowerPoint marketplace listings carry middling review scores despite the product being genuinely useful when it works.

Ordinary token expiry. If Claude asks you to sign in again every few days rather than looping instantly, that is normal session expiry, not a bug. Sign in again and your conversation history is unaffected: note that add-in chat history is stored locally in your browser, not on Anthropic's servers, which also explains why it does not follow you across devices.

Fix 5: your IT admin or tenant is blocking it

If the add-in works on a personal account but not your work account, the tenant is the problem. Here is exactly what to ask your admin to do, in their language:

  • Assign the add-in: Microsoft 365 Admin Center, Settings, Integrated apps: search "Claude by Anthropic" and assign it to the whole org, a group, or specific users.

  • For Outlook specifically, grant Graph consent for the scopes the add-in needs: Mail.ReadWrite, Calendars.Read, People.Read, User.Read, and offline_access. Without admin consent the Outlook add-in cannot read your inbox at all. Reassure them: the add-in deliberately does not request Mail.Send, so Claude cannot send email on its own under any circumstances.

  • Check Conditional Access policies. These can silently block Claude's sign-in with no useful error. The standard diagnostic is to temporarily exclude the Claude apps from Conditional Access policies to confirm the cause, then write a scoped exception.

  • EU, EFTA and UK tenants: the integration is off by default there (see Fix 1) and requires an explicit opt-in in the admin center.

New failure mode since July 2026: if the add-in itself works but email sending or calendar actions fail, that is the Microsoft 365 connector's write tools (added July 7, 2026) waiting on admin consent to updated permissions, which is a separate approval from the add-in. Point your admin at the connector permission prompt, not the add-in deployment settings.

Fix 6: the add-in loads but Claude will not respond

  • You are on the free plan. All four Office add-ins require a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. There is no extra fee for the add-ins themselves, but the free tier does not qualify. Compare what each plan costs at your team size with our AI cost calculator.

  • You hit your usage limit. Add-in usage draws from the same rolling usage window as your normal Claude subscription. If you have been heavy on claude.ai or Claude Code the same day, the add-in throttles with it. Wait for the window to reset.

  • Unsupported file or feature. In Excel, Claude supports .xlsx and .xlsm files only, and it cannot work with data tables, macros or VBA. If your workbook leans on those, Claude will read around them or fail quietly.

  • Unsupported platform. Android is not supported for any of the four apps, and only Excel supports iPad. On mobile Outlook the add-in does not run at all.

When to remove and reinstall clean

Reinstalling fixes less than people hope, because most failures above are version gates, tenant policy or service-side bugs. But if you have ruled those out: remove Claude under My Add-ins, quit the app fully, reopen it, then reinstall from AppSource and sign in fresh. On Windows, if add-ins in general misbehave, an Office repair (Control Panel, Programs, Change, Quick Repair) is the last local resort before escalating.

Still stuck: escalate to the right place

  • Anthropic support for sign-in loops, the redirect URI error, plan and limit questions, and anything inside the Claude pane itself.

  • Microsoft Q&A or your admin for install failures, missing buttons after the version check passes, tenant assignment and Conditional Access issues.

  • Outlook is still in beta: some rough edges are expected, and Anthropic's own documentation says not to rely on any of the add-ins for final, unreviewed deliverables.

FAQ

Why did the Claude add-in disappear from my Outlook ribbon?

Usually the add-in cache: go to My Add-ins and click Refresh, then check Manage My Add-ins and re-pin it. If it vanished the same day for many users, it is a service-side incident; check the Microsoft Q&A forum before reinstalling.

Do I need a specific version of Microsoft 365 for Claude to work?

Yes. Office 2016 and 2019 perpetual licenses are not supported at all, and each app has a minimum Microsoft 365 build (see the version table above). This is the most common cause of failed installs.

Can my company IT department block the Claude add-in?

Yes, in three ways: by not assigning it in Integrated apps, by withholding the Graph consent the Outlook add-in needs, or through Conditional Access policies that block Claude's sign-in silently. Fix 5 gives you the exact requests to send your admin.

Why does Claude ask me to sign in again every few days?

Periodic re-authentication is normal session expiry. An instant, unbreakable sign-in loop is different: that matches a known server-side OAuth bug you should report to Anthropic rather than try to fix locally.

Is the Claude for Outlook add-in still in beta?

Yes, as of July 2026 Outlook is the newest of the four add-ins and still carries the beta label, while Excel, Word and PowerPoint are generally available. Some instability in Outlook is expected and improving.

Does this guide apply to Claude for Excel, Word and PowerPoint too?

Yes. The add-ins share the same account, plan requirements, deployment path and most failure modes. Only the version gates and the Outlook Graph permissions differ, and both are covered above.

Is it worth fixing, or should I just use Copilot instead?

They are good at different jobs, and plenty of teams run both. Before switching, see our app-by-app breakdown: Claude vs Microsoft Copilot in Word, Excel and Outlook, and the Claude profile for the full picture of what the model itself can do.

Can Claude send email from Outlook without me knowing?

No. The add-in does not hold the permission that would allow sending. Claude drafts replies and calendar invites into your compose window, and you press Send.
