Which plan do I need to use Claude in Office?

You need any paid Claude plan. The Office add-ins for Excel, Word and PowerPoint and the Outlook beta are available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Free is excluded. Microsoft 365 itself must be a Microsoft 365 subscription with a work or school account; personal @outlook.com accounts and Office 2016 or 2019 are not supported.

On the Microsoft side, the Office add-ins require a Microsoft 365 subscription tied to a Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) tenant. Outlook for the Office add-in supports the new Outlook on Windows, classic Outlook on Windows with a Microsoft 365 subscription, Outlook on Mac with a Microsoft 365 subscription, and Outlook on the web. How do I install Claude in Excel? (step-by-step)

Open Excel, go to Home, click Add-ins, search the Microsoft AppSource catalog for "Claude by Anthropic," and click Add. The same listing covers Word and PowerPoint, so you only run this install once across the three apps. Sign in to your paid Claude account when the sidebar opens. Total time on a clean install: about three minutes.

1. Open Excel on Mac or Windows. Use a Microsoft 365 subscription account, not a personal Outlook.com account.

2. Click Home then Add-ins. If you don't see Add-ins, click Get Add-ins or use Insert > Get Add-ins (varies by build).

3. Search "Claude by Anthropic" in the AppSource search box. The official listing is published by Anthropic and covers Excel, Word and PowerPoint in one install.

4. Click Add and accept the Microsoft permissions prompt.

5. Open the Claude sidebar from the ribbon. A "Claude" button appears on the Home tab once installed.

6. Sign in with your paid Claude account (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise). Free accounts will be rejected at this step.

7. Confirm install: a chat sidebar appears on the right, with the active worksheet name shown at the top of the panel. That confirms Claude can see the file context.

Enterprise admins should not ask end users to do this manually. Push the add-in centrally from the Microsoft 365 admin center under Settings > Integrated Apps > Get Apps, search Claude, and assign to the right user groups. That avoids the "is everyone on the same version" problem.

Success state to confirm install worked: type "summarize the active sheet in three bullets" and you should get a response that names the actual sheet by file name and tab name. If Claude responds with a generic answer about Excel, the file context handoff did not happen, usually because the sidebar opened before the workbook fully loaded. Close and reopen the sidebar.

How do I install Claude in Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook?

Word and PowerPoint: if you installed the Excel add-in above, the Claude sidebar already appears in Word and PowerPoint when you open them. No second install is needed. What are the privacy and data-residency implications?

Claude for Office runs prompts and file content through Anthropic's API on the Claude plan you signed in with. Enterprise plans get the strongest controls: prompts and tool calls can be exported to your own collector via OpenTelemetry, traffic can be routed to Claude on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or Microsoft Foundry instead of the default Anthropic API, and the Analytics API breaks down activity by user, app and day.
