Amazon Q

Freemium

Amazon Q is AWS’s assistant family: Q Developer for builders (Free or $19/user/month Pro) and Q Business for enterprise knowledge (Lite $3 / Pro $20 per user/month plus index capacity). As of September 2026 AWS also points new agentic workplace buyers toward Quick Suite as Q Business’s next evolution.

Amazon Q is AWS’s family of generative AI assistants. The two directory-relevant products are Amazon Q Developer (IDE/CLI/console coding assistant) and Amazon Q Business (permission-aware enterprise knowledge assistant with indexes and apps). As of September 2026 AWS still publishes both price cards, while positioning Amazon Quick Suite as the next evolution of Q Business for new agentic workplace use: existing Q Business customers can continue or bring their Q index into Quick Suite. Do not collapse Q Developer and Q Business into one SKU.

Verified AWS list prices (retrieved 2 Sep 2026): Q Developer Free ($0, 50 agentic requests/month) and Pro $19/user/month (higher limits, Identity Center admin, IP indemnity; Java transformation 4,000 LOC/user/month pooled, then $0.003/LOC). Q Business Lite $3/user/month and Pro $20/user/month, plus index capacity (Starter $0.140/hour/unit; Enterprise $0.264/hour/unit; 20k documents or 200 MB extracted text per unit). Anonymous embedded chat: $200 per 30,000 units/month (2 units per ChatSync/prompt).

What Amazon Q delivers as of September 2026

Q Developer: agentic coding and Q&A in IDEs and CLI, console error diagnosis, reference tracking, optional public-code suppression, Java/.NET transformation agents, and Pro-tier admin dashboards via IAM Identity Center. Q Business: connect enterprise sources, permission-aware answers, file insights, browser extension; Pro adds Q Apps, QuickSight Reader Pro, plugins (Slack/Outlook/Word/Teams), longer responses, image responses. Indexes bill whether full or not until deleted. 60-day Q Business free trial: up to 50 users and 1,500 index hours per application (limits apply).

Where Amazon Q sits versus GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Copilot

GitHub Copilot remains the IDE coding default for many GitHub-centric teams; Q Developer is stronger when the center of gravity is AWS console, IAM, and account-level transformation quotas. Microsoft Copilot owns Microsoft 365 Graph grounding; Q Business owns AWS-centric knowledge indexes and IAM Identity Center deduplication. For raw model APIs use Amazon Bedrock instead of Q seats.

Cost, quotas, and real usage friction

Q Developer Free’s 50 agentic requests/month throttle real agentic coding quickly. Pro activates on first qualifying action (agentic coding, transformation, completions) and bills the full month if canceled mid-cycle. Q Business sticker is seats + always-on index hours: a quiet Enterprise index unit is ~$190/month (0.264×24×30). Image/audio/video ingestion adders apply. QuickSight Author/Reader Pro are separate line items on the Q pricing hub ($24/$50 Author; $3/$20 Reader). For net-new enterprise knowledge / agentic workplace deals, evaluate Amazon Quick / Quick Suite rather than greenfield Q Business (closed to new customers).

Where Amazon Q still breaks

Product sprawl (Developer vs Business vs QuickSight vs Connect vs Quick Suite) confuses buyers comparing a single “Amazon Q” price. Free Tier IDE limits require Builder ID. Q Business anonymous units do not roll over. AWS End of Support Notice (aws.amazon.com/q/business/, retrieved 4 Sep 2026) states Amazon Q Business is no longer available to new customers. Existing customers continue with bug fixes and security updates; AWS points new agentic workplace buyers to Amazon Quick / Quick Suite. The Business pricing page still documents Lite $3 / Pro $20 list prices plus index hours for current packaging reference.

Who should use Amazon Q: and who should skip it

Use Q Developer if your builders live in AWS IDEs/CLI/console and $19 Pro seats beat Copilot for your workflow. Use Q Business if you need permission-aware answers over AWS-connected enterprise data and accept index hour math. Skip if you need a consumer multimodal chatbot (ChatGPT/Gemini), Microsoft 365-native Copilot, or pure Bedrock token APIs without an assistant shell. Skip greenfield Q Business rollouts; confirm Amazon Quick packaging with AWS instead.
