Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is Apple’s systemwide on-device and Private Cloud Compute AI layer across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, and Apple Vision Pro. It is not a separate SaaS seat: features ship as free OS updates on supported hardware. As of September 2026, apple.com/apple-intelligence markets the next generation for fall release with iOS 27 / iPadOS 27 / macOS 27, including a reimagined Siri AI (English later in the year), Visual Intelligence expansions, Photos editing (Spatial Reframing, Extend, Clean Up), Image Playground, Write with Siri, Live Translation, and more. Some features are already marked available; others are listed as coming.

Compatible devices listed on Apple’s page include iPhone 15 Pro and later (through iPhone 17 / 17 Pro / Air / 17e families), iPads with M1+ or iPad mini A17 Pro, Macs with M1+ plus M-series Macs, Apple Vision Pro, and recent Apple Watch models when paired with an Apple Intelligence iPhone. There is no per-request charge for Apple’s Foundation Models framework for developers. There is no Copilot-style Apple Intelligence subscription.

What Apple Intelligence delivers as of September 2026

Siri AI: conversational assistant with personal context, in-app actions, world knowledge, dedicated Siri app, customizable voice expressivity/pace (hardware-gated for the most powerful on-device models), CarPlay. Visual Intelligence: camera/Siri mode search and actions; expanding to Mac, iPad, Vision Pro. Photos/images: Spatial Reframing, Extend, enhanced Clean Up, photorealistic Image Playground, Image Wand in Notes. Communication: Write with Siri, proofreading, Call Context, Live Translation (Messages/FaceTime/Phone/AirPods). Productivity: smarter Safari tab grouping and Notify Me, Passwords autofix, describe-a-shortcut, calendar from description, improved Dictation. Privacy: on-device processing plus Private Cloud Compute (data not stored; used only for the request; verifiable privacy promise).

Where Apple Intelligence sits versus ChatGPT and Gemini

ChatGPT and Google Gemini are cross-platform cloud assistants with freemium seats and APIs. Apple Intelligence is hardware- and OS-bound, deeper in system apps, weaker as a standalone chat destination or developer API business. Apple’s September 2026 apple.com/apple-intelligence page does not currently list a named third-party assistant sticker inside Siri or Writing Tools; check live Settings before citing any partner integration or fee. Cost and friction

Software price is $0 on supported devices. Real cost is hardware eligibility: older iPhones that run iOS 27 may still lack Apple Intelligence. Advanced on-device model features (expressive Siri voices, higher-accuracy dictation) are further gated to the most capable devices (Apple and press materials highlight iPhone 17 Pro / Air-class silicon). Language and region availability varies; Apple lists many languages with “some features may not be available in all regions or languages.”

Where it still breaks

Not a cloud LLM API for your backend. Cross-platform teams (Android/Windows-first) cannot standardize on it. Feature shipping is staggered (fall OS vs “later this year” Siri AI English). Enterprise MDM/compliance teams still need to map Private Cloud Compute to their data policies: on-device helps, but server models still leave the device under Apple’s PCC design.

Who should use Apple Intelligence: and who should skip it

Use it if you already buy Apple hardware in the supported list and want system-integrated writing, images, Visual Intelligence, and Siri AI without another $20/month seat. Skip if you need a vendor-neutral API, Windows/Android parity, or enterprise admin SaaS controls like Copilot/Q Business. Skip expecting a ChatGPT-class standalone research agent: that is still a different product category.
