How AI Assistants Decide Which Tools to Recommend: Data From 11,000 Copilot Citations

Between May 8 and August 6, 2026, Microsoft Copilot and its partners cited pages from our directory 11,100 times in AI-generated answers, peaking at 554 citations in a single day. Bing Webmaster Tools now shows exactly which queries triggered those citations and what share of the answer each page earned. If you build or market a SaaS product, this is a rare look at the selection layer that decides whether YOUR product appears when a buyer asks an AI assistant what to use. Here is what the data says, with the numbers.
Finding 1: buyers are running vendor due diligence inside Copilot
The single biggest surprise in our grounding-query data: the top citation cluster was not casual browsing but professional software evaluation. One tool page, our listing for a finance AI platform, drew hundreds of citations from queries like "Rogo AI Excel investment banking software evaluation" and "Rogo financial software company evaluation private equity analysts", with our page supplying 17% to 42% of the cited grounding for individual queries. Bing's own intent labels tag these overwhelmingly as "Research" and "Commercial".
Read that as a buyer-behavior signal: analysts and managers now ask Copilot to evaluate vendors by name before shortlisting them. If the assistant's retrieval layer finds no independent, structured page about your product, you are absent from a diligence process you never knew happened.
Finding 2: three page formats earn nearly all citations
| Format | Example query it wins | Why it gets retrieved |
|---|---|---|
| Structured single-tool page (pricing, features, FAQ, pros/cons) | "[vendor] software evaluation" | One page answers the whole diligence question with quotable facts |
| Troubleshooting and how-to content | "claude for outlook add in" (433 citations, 21.7% answer share) | Assistants favor pages that resolve the user's exact task |
| Comparisons and alternatives pages | "[tool] vs [tool]", "[tool] alternatives" | The answer IS a comparison; a pre-built one is the ideal source |
What did not get cited from our site: thin category pages, tag pages, and anything without concrete numbers. Assistants quote facts, so pages without extractable facts have nothing to contribute. This maps directly to the submission advice in our guide on where to list your AI tool: fill in the structured fields everywhere, because structure is what gets retrieved.

Finding 3: citation share concentrates hard
Across 169 sampled grounding queries, citations followed a power law: a handful of pages earned hundreds of citations each while most earned single digits. Our top page family (one vendor's evaluation queries) accounted for a clear majority of all citations. The practical takeaway for a SaaS founder: you do not need presence on a thousand pages. You need to be excellently covered on the few pages that answer YOUR buyers' three or four highest-intent questions: your evaluation page, your comparison against the incumbent, and your alternatives page.
Finding 4: citation traffic is fragile in a way SEO is not
In mid-July our site had a roughly 3-day availability problem (a redirect-loop bug during a deploy window). Classic Bing search impressions dipped and recovered within about a week. Copilot citations went from 500+ per day to literal zero for four days, and the recovery has been far slower: where 20 to 54 distinct pages per day were being cited before the outage, the grounding index cited a single page per day for weeks afterward. Labeled inference, since Bing does not document this: retrieval indexes appear to drop unreliable hosts aggressively and re-onboard them conservatively. The lesson: uptime and crawl continuity are not just SEO hygiene anymore, they gate your presence in AI answers.

What to do with this if you sell software
- Name-search yourself in Copilot and ChatGPT the way an analyst would: "[your product] evaluation", "[your product] vs [incumbent]". What gets cited is your current diligence surface.
- Get one structured, independently hosted page per high-intent question: a full directory listing with current pricing (ours is free to submit), a comparison page against your main rival, and an alternatives page you appear on.
- Keep pricing current everywhere. A stale price is not a small error; it makes the page unquotable for the exact query that matters.
- Protect uptime around launches. A bad deploy week can silently remove you from AI answers for a month.
- Write troubleshooting content for your own product. The single most-cited page in our dataset outside vendor evaluations was setup-and-fixes content. Own those queries before a forum thread does.
Methodology and limits
Source: Bing Webmaster Tools "AI Performance" report for vantaige.io, May 8 to August 6, 2026: 11,100 total citations, 169 sampled grounding queries, per-query citation counts and citation share as reported by Bing. This covers Microsoft Copilot and partner surfaces only; ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini do not publish equivalent per-site data, so treat cross-assistant generalizations as informed inference. Query text is AI-labeled by Bing and may be paraphrased. Our directory's own composition biases which page formats COULD be cited; the within-site ranking of formats is the robust finding.
FAQ
How do I get my SaaS recommended by ChatGPT or Copilot?
Be present with structured, current facts on the pages assistants retrieve: independent directory listings, comparison pages, alternatives pages, and troubleshooting content for your product's setup queries. Concrete numbers get quoted; adjectives do not.
Does Bing Webmaster Tools really show AI citations?
Yes. The AI Performance report shows total citations, cited pages, and sampled grounding queries with intent labels and citation share for Microsoft Copilot and partner surfaces. It is currently the only major platform giving site owners this visibility.
What content format gets cited most by AI assistants?
In our data: structured single-product pages with pricing and FAQs, followed by troubleshooting content, followed by comparisons. Thin category and tag pages earned effectively nothing.
Can downtime affect AI assistant recommendations?
In our experience, dramatically: a 3-day availability problem zeroed our citations for four days and suppressed the breadth of cited pages for weeks afterward, an effect far more severe than the same incident's impact on classic search.
Is this the same as GEO (generative engine optimization)?
Yes, this is GEO with receipts: the same practices recommended generically (structure, freshness, comparisons, citations) validated against actual per-query citation data from a live site.
