Later is a visual social media scheduler and influencer marketing platform built for Instagram-first brands and creators. It combines drag-and-drop feed planning, AI caption writing, Linkin.bio, and enterprise influencer campaign tools under one roof.

Features:APIMobile App

Later is a social media scheduling and influencer marketing platform founded in 2014 in Vancouver, Canada. It started as Latergramme, the first-to-market Instagram scheduler built at a hackathon by Ian MacKinnon, Matt Smith, Cindy Chen, and Roger Patterson. Over the next decade it expanded from a single-platform scheduler into a combined social management and influencer marketing suite, following Mavrck's acquisition of Later in April 2022 and the two companies' full unification under the Later brand in January 2024. Today the platform claims 7 million users globally and operates three distinct products: Later Social for scheduling, Later Influence for enterprise influencer campaigns, and Later Link in Bio for driving e-commerce traffic from Instagram and TikTok bios.

Later's core scheduling product covers Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. Its defining feature is the visual drag-and-drop grid planner, which lets you preview exactly how your Instagram feed will look before any post goes live. Additional tools include a media library for organizing assets, an AI Caption Writer that generates up to three caption options per post (trained on your brand's previous posts for tone matching), Linkin.bio for converting Instagram and TikTok bio clicks into shoppable storefronts, and best-time-to-post recommendations based on your audience's engagement patterns. Later Influence, the enterprise tier formerly branded as Mavrck, extends the platform into creator discovery (10M+ creator database), campaign management, UGC approval workflows, and earned media value tracking used by brands like Gillette, New Balance, and Universal Studios.

What Later actually is in May 2026

In practice, Later operates as two distinct products sharing a brand name. For most users who pay $25-$110/month, Later Social is a visual Instagram and TikTok scheduler with a strong Linkin.bio integration and a serviceable AI caption tool. For enterprise marketing teams paying custom rates, Later Influence is a full-stack influencer marketing platform inherited from Mavrck, with the creator database, campaign orchestration, and ROI attribution tools that direct-to-consumer brands use to run paid creator programs at scale.

The January 2024 brand unification marked the completion of a two-year integration. Lyle Stevens, co-founder of Mavrck, serves as CEO of the combined entity. The unification was described at the time as creating "the industry's first Social Revenue Platform," linking social scheduling data with influencer campaign performance in a single dashboard. In early 2025, Mavely (an affiliate-driven creator commerce network) joined the Later family, extending the platform's capabilities into creator-driven sales tracking.

One platform change worth knowing before you sign up: Later ended all X (formerly Twitter) support on August 28, 2025. Users on annual plans who had paid for X scheduling lost access mid-subscription with no reported compensation. New X accounts can no longer be connected to Later. If Twitter/X is part of your content mix, Later is off the table.

Where Later sits versus Buffer and Hootsuite

The three most-compared tools in this category divide along a clear axis: Buffer optimizes for simplicity and affordability, Hootsuite for enterprise depth, and Later for visual Instagram-first workflows.

Later vs. Buffer: Buffer uses a queue-based publishing model with no visual grid preview. Later's drag-and-drop feed planner is its primary differentiator over Buffer. However, Buffer maintains a genuinely free plan (3 social channels, 10 posts per channel) while Later offers only a 14-day trial before requiring payment. Buffer also supports Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon, which Later does not. For solo creators on tight budgets, Buffer's free tier is a harder offer to ignore. For Instagram brands that need to see their grid before publishing, Later wins this comparison.

Later vs. Hootsuite: Hootsuite operates in a different price tier (starting around $99/month) and targets social media managers at agencies and mid-to-large companies. The mechanical differences are substantial. Hootsuite provides 300 AI credits per user per month vs. Later Starter's 5. Hootsuite's unified inbox handles comments and messages across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and WhatsApp. Later's inbox covers only public Instagram and TikTok comments. Every Hootsuite plan includes social listening tools; Later has no social listening below the enterprise Later Influence tier. Hootsuite also has 100+ native integrations. Later's integration surface is smaller. The trade-off: Hootsuite has no visual grid planner and costs four times as much as Later's entry point.

Users who need a mid-point on price and feature depth often look at Publer and Metricool as alternatives with broader AI tooling at competitive prices. Sprout Social sits closer to Hootsuite territory for enterprise needs.

How AI actually works inside Later

Later launched its AI Caption Writer on February 22, 2023, powered by the GPT-3 API. The tool takes a short text prompt describing a post and generates up to three caption options with varying lengths and tones. Over time, it builds a tone-of-voice model from your brand's previous posts, so generated captions drift toward your established style rather than generic output. Later's President at the time, Roger Patterson, called it "the beginning" of how AI would change content development for small businesses.

By 2025, Caption Writer had expanded beyond Instagram to all supported platforms and was available on desktop and mobile. The tool is "currently only available in English and remains a beta feature" per Later's own help documentation, which is a relevant limitation for international brands.

AI credit allocation varies sharply by plan. Starter users get 5 AI credits per month. Growth users get 50. Scale users get 100. For comparison, Hootsuite provides 300 AI credits per user monthly at all plan levels. If you plan to use Caption Writer heavily, the credit ceiling on Starter is genuinely restrictive, and the upgrade cost to Growth ($50/mo) represents a 100% price increase for a 10x credit increase.

Best-time-to-post recommendations are algorithmically generated from your specific account's historical engagement data, not industry-wide averages. This makes the suggestions more relevant but means new accounts with no posting history won't see useful recommendations immediately.

The friction users keep raising

Later's Trustpilot score is 1.3 out of 5, classified as "Bad." The gap between its G2 score (4.5/5) and Trustpilot score is one of the sharpest in the social scheduling category. The explanation is straightforward: G2 reviewers are people using the product actively and evaluating its features; Trustpilot reviewers disproportionately arrive after a billing dispute.

The recurring complaints break into a few categories. First, billing after free trials: users report being charged without adequate notice at the end of the 14-day trial, with support rejecting refund requests. Second, the Starter plan's post limits. With 30 posts per month per profile, a creator posting twice daily hits the ceiling on day 15. One G2 reviewer noted: "30 posts per month on the basic plan is absurd. I post 2x daily." Third, the X/Twitter sunset. Annual subscribers who had specifically paid for X scheduling capabilities lost that feature mid-subscription in August 2025 with no reported pro-rated adjustment. Fourth, team collaboration: below the Scale tier, Later has no content approval workflows, no role-based permissions for draft review, and limited multi-user functionality. Agency owners and marketing managers consistently describe it as a tool designed for individuals, not teams.

Customer support response times average around 3 days based on user reports, which is slow for a scheduling platform where a publishing failure or access issue can have immediate business consequences.

Who Later is for

Later works best for three distinct user types. The first is the Instagram-first solo creator or small brand: someone whose primary distribution channel is Instagram (and possibly TikTok or Pinterest), who cares about visual feed consistency, and who posts at moderate volume. The visual grid planner, Linkin.bio, and Caption Writer collectively justify the subscription cost if Instagram aesthetics are a genuine priority.

The second is the e-commerce brand using social commerce. The Linkin.bio tool creates a shoppable layer from a single Instagram bio link, with Shopify integration. Reviewers who use this feature specifically report measurable click-through improvements. If your business model involves converting Instagram followers into buyers, this capability is harder to replicate with simpler schedulers.

The third, entirely separate user type, is the enterprise marketing team running influencer programs. Later Influence (the former Mavrck product) serves Fortune 500 brands running multi-tier creator campaigns with performance tracking and ROI attribution. This is a different product at a different price point and isn't relevant to the $25-$110/month subscription tiers.

Skip Later if: you need X/Twitter scheduling; you post more than once daily on the Starter plan; you need team approval workflows below $110/month; you need social listening at any accessible price; you need support for Threads, Bluesky, or Mastodon; or billing disputes and cancellation friction represent unacceptable operational risk for your business. For multi-platform schedulers with broader AI tooling, Publer and Metricool are worth evaluating before committing to Later.
