Reflio is a privacy-first affiliate and referral program platform built for SaaS founders. Set up Stripe or Paddle commission tracking in minutes, with GDPR-compliant EU infrastructure and fraud controls baked in from the start.

Features:API

Reflio is an affiliate and referral program management platform built specifically for SaaS founders who need functional commission tracking without paying enterprise-tier prices for it. The product was created by Richie McIlroy, an indie developer based in Liverpool, UK, who built the initial MVP over a single weekend in April 2022 after finding that every existing affiliate tool either cost $100+ per month or took a heavy percentage cut of revenue. The platform integrates directly with Stripe and Paddle, handles GDPR consent management for EU referrals automatically, and runs on European-owned infrastructure, which matters to founders with data sovereignty requirements.

The core feature set covers everything a small-to-mid-stage SaaS program needs: a one-line JavaScript embed (under 13kb) that tracks referral clicks and conversions across your main domain and subdomains without additional configuration, customizable double-sided rewards (cash, credits, or discounts), recurring commission support for subscription products, fraud detection through disposable email blocking and self-referral detection, and a REST API for custom integrations. Affiliates get their own branded signup pages and a unified dashboard if they manage multiple programs. Founders get real-time performance reporting: clicks, conversions, commission payouts. If you also use tools like Beehiiv or Kit for newsletter-driven acquisition, Reflio's affiliate links layer onto those workflows without requiring a separate platform.

What Reflio actually is in May 2026

Reflio launched publicly in September 2022 with a Show HN post on Hacker News that generated immediate interest from the bootstrapped SaaS community. In June 2022, founder Richie McIlroy announced on X that he was making the entire codebase 100% open source, a response to community criticism about the platform's original dual AGPL and commercial licensing model. That open-source era has since closed: as of mid-2026, the GitHub organization (github.com/Reflio-com) lists no public repositories, and the primary product appears to operate as a hosted SaaS.

Two product variants exist: the original reflio.com platform and a relaunched reflio.app product that entered beta in Q4 2025. The newer version moves away from the percentage-of-referral-fee model (which charged 9% on successful commissions on the free tier) and toward flat-rate pricing. Core features across both variants include Stripe and Paddle payment integrations, real-time referral dashboards, automated commission calculations, and a customizable affiliate portal with your own branding and color scheme.

The Paddle integration is worth noting as a milestone. When Reflio launched in late 2022, Rewardful, its closest direct competitor, was Stripe-only. Reflio shipped Paddle support on December 15, 2022 (announced via a second HN thread by mcilroy), giving European SaaS founders who rely on Paddle a turnkey option before the bigger players caught up. That technical advantage narrowed over time as Rewardful added Paddle support, but Reflio's positioning as an GDPR-native, European-infrastructure platform remains a genuine differentiator for the EU market.

Where Reflio sits versus Rewardful and PartnerStack

The practical comparison comes down to stage, budget, and complexity needs.

Rewardful ($49-$149+/mo) was built around Stripe from its founding in roughly 2018 and has accumulated years of edge-case handling for SaaS billing events: trial-to-paid conversions, mid-cycle upgrades and downgrades, churn-and-reactivation scenarios, and recurring commission windows. Its plans cap affiliate revenue (Starter handles up to $7,500/mo in tracked affiliate revenue, Growth up to $15,000/mo), which means fast-growing programs have to upgrade. There is no embeddable widget for in-app referral flows; affiliates operate through a separate hosted portal. Rewardful's documentation, support community, and integration ecosystem are more mature than Reflio's. For a SaaS already generating meaningful revenue and wanting rock-solid Stripe tracking with minimal edge-case surprises, Rewardful is the safer choice. The tradeoff is the higher floor: $49/mo before you have a single affiliate is a real cost for pre-revenue products.

PartnerStack (custom pricing, typically $6,000+/yr base plus 3-15% take fees on partner payouts) operates at an entirely different scale. It handles not just affiliates but resellers, channel partners, and multi-tier partner programs from a single platform. Its partner marketplace has over 116,000 active affiliates who can discover and apply to your program without you doing cold outreach. PartnerStack provides designated customer success managers, executive sponsorship tiers, and custom workflow integrations. None of this is relevant for most SaaS startups. The platform is priced for companies doing serious B2B partner-led growth, not indie hackers trying to add a referral tier to a $29/mo product. The onboarding alone typically runs 3-4 weeks.

Reflio's mechanical position: sub-13kb embed script, GDPR consent automation for EU referrals, auto cross-subdomain tracking, flat commission management, and a startup-accessible price floor. It does not have a partner marketplace, does not handle reseller or multi-tier relationships, and does not provide Rewardful's depth of Stripe billing event coverage. What it provides is a working affiliate program for a SaaS product without the overhead of enterprise tooling or a $49/mo commitment before the program has proved itself.

"I've been looking for something like this earlier this year but could not find." -- vinibrito, Hacker News, September 2022
"Each and every one of the [existing affiliate] programs was just too expensive -- planning to implement Reflio for Ricordi." -- vukradic, Indie Hackers, August 2022

How the affiliate engine actually works inside Reflio

Setup follows a three-step path. First, embed the JavaScript snippet in your site's head tag. The script identifies returning visitors, ties referral cookies to sessions, and handles cross-domain tracking automatically for subdomains (so if your marketing site is example.com and your app is app.example.com, referral attribution carries across without manual configuration). Second, connect your Stripe or Paddle account. Reflio hooks into payment webhooks to detect successful charges, subscriptions created, and renewals. Third, configure your commission structure: flat fee per conversion, percentage of sale, or recurring commission for up to N months post-signup.

Affiliates receive a branded signup page specific to each campaign. Once approved, they get a personal dashboard showing their referral link, click counts, conversion counts, and pending and paid commissions. Payouts flow through Stripe or PayPal mass payouts (though PayPal's mass payout functionality is US-restricted, which caused friction for international programs). For EU referrals, Reflio presents a cookie consent confirmation before setting any tracking cookie, which means compliance overhead that typically requires a custom CMP is handled by the platform itself.

Double-sided rewards work by issuing a credit or discount to the referred customer at checkout (through a Stripe coupon or Paddle discount code) while simultaneously triggering a commission for the referrer. This is the mechanism that pairs well with Ghost or Substack newsletter growth workflows: embed a referral incentive in your onboarding email sequence, and new subscribers are nudged to share before they've even fully explored the product.

The REST API exposes campaign data, affiliate records, referral events, and commission states. This enables custom integrations: surfacing an affiliate's referral stats inside your app's settings panel, automating affiliate approvals based on customer LTV thresholds, or syncing commission data to a BI dashboard. For founders who also use SparkLoop for newsletter referral loops, Reflio handles the software product side of the same referral growth model.

The friction and reliability concerns users keep raising

The most substantive technical limitation is tracking coverage for conversions that happen outside the web funnel. A meaningful slice of SaaS sales happen through Discord communities, podcast affiliate codes, or Twitter DM conversations where the customer never clicks a Reflio-tracked link. One HN commenter (combyn8tor, September 2022) described building their own workaround using unique Stripe promo codes distributed per-affiliate, a manually intensive process that partially defeats the purpose of an automated platform. Reflio does support coupon code tracking as an alternative attribution method, but the setup requires more manual management than link-based tracking.

PayPal mass payouts are US-only, which is a meaningful constraint for a platform marketing itself to European and international SaaS founders. The platform recommends Stripe payouts or Wise as alternatives, but neither is as seamless as a native payout button. Founders with affiliates across multiple countries sometimes end up running two parallel payout processes.

The licensing controversy from September 2022, where multiple HN commenters (s1k3s, matt-p, ensignavenger) flagged concerns about the AGPL+Commercial split and the presence of a proprietary enterprise tier, eventually led to the 100% open source announcement. However, the current product is a closed SaaS again, and the GitHub organization has no public repos. For founders who chose Reflio specifically for its open-source and self-hostable properties, the product has quietly moved away from that value proposition.

There have also been questions about product continuity. In September 2023, an Indie Hackers user reported the site appeared non-functional. The emergence of a separate reflio.app domain in late 2025 adds ambiguity for existing users about which product to use, how data migrates, and what the long-term roadmap looks like. For a mission-critical business process like affiliate commission tracking, that uncertainty matters more than it would for a discretionary productivity tool.

Who Reflio is for

Reflio is the right call for a specific profile: a SaaS founder at the pre-scale stage who needs a working affiliate program without committing to $49+/mo before a single affiliate has converted. If your product runs on Stripe or Paddle, your audience is primarily web-based (so tracking works), and you have EU users who care about GDPR-compliant cookie handling, Reflio covers the functional requirements at an accessible price floor. Founders building newsletter-driven growth loops on Kit or similar platforms will find that Reflio's double-sided referral rewards layer naturally onto email-based acquisition flows.

Skip Reflio if your affiliate program is already a primary growth channel generating meaningful revenue. At that point, the maturity gap between Reflio and Rewardful becomes tangible: Rewardful's deeper Stripe billing event coverage, more reliable documentation, and larger support community justify the higher price. Skip it if you need enterprise partner management, reseller programs, or a partner discovery marketplace; PartnerStack is the only option in that category, expensive as it is. And skip it if a significant portion of your conversions happen outside the web, through Discord, podcast promo codes, or off-site channel partners, because the tracking gaps will create commission disputes and affiliate trust issues that are hard to fix retroactively.

The honest summary: Reflio is a well-executed tool for a specific segment. It does not try to be Rewardful or PartnerStack. For bootstrapped founders running a Stripe or Paddle SaaS who want functional affiliate tracking at the lowest possible cost, it works. The concerns are continuity and support depth. Founders who build affiliate programs that grow significantly will need to migrate to a more robust platform eventually.
