Thinkific

Freemium

Thinkific is a Vancouver-based learning commerce platform for course creators and education businesses. Build structured courses, sell with integrated payments, and deploy AI tools including quiz generators and the Thinker AI teaching assistant. Plans start at $36/mo.

Features:APIMobile App

Thinkific is a cloud-based learning commerce platform built for course creators, knowledge entrepreneurs, and corporate training teams who want to sell and deliver online education without custom development. Founded in Vancouver in 2012 by CEO Greg Smith and his co-founders, the company went public on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX: THNC) in April 2021, raising over $160 million. In April 2026, Thinkific serves tens of thousands of active creators and businesses ranging from solo instructors to enterprise teams running SCORM-compliant compliance training.

The platform covers the full course business stack: lesson authoring (12 content types including video, text, quizzes, assignments, and PDFs), integrated payment processing via TCommerce, community spaces, live events and coaching sessions, digital downloads, and a growing AI layer that includes an AI Quiz Generator, AI Course Outline Generator, AI Copy Co-Pilot, and Thinker, an AI teaching assistant launched in February 2026. Plans run from $36/mo (Basic, billed annually) through a custom-priced Thinkific Plus tier for enterprises needing SSO, SCORM, branded mobile apps, and CRM integrations.

What Thinkific actually is in April 2026

Thinkific positions itself as a "learning commerce platform," which in practice means it combines the course creation tools of a traditional LMS with the selling infrastructure of an ecommerce system. The core product has three distinct layers: the course builder, the storefront/payment system, and the community product.

The course builder supports 12 lesson types, branching paths (Plus tier), certificates, SCORM import (Plus), assignments, surveys, and quizzes. The December 2024 AI release added the AI Quiz Generator, which builds multiple-choice assessments from existing lesson content, and the AI Course Outline Generator, which converts a topic prompt into a structured module plan. Both are available on paid plans. The AI Copy Co-Pilot assists with editing tone and SEO copy throughout the platform.

TCommerce (Thinkific Payments) is the commerce layer, launched in September 2022. It handles one-click checkout, digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay), Buy Now Pay Later, Order Bumps, subscription Smart Retries, and integrated bookkeeping exports. Data from the platform shows checkout speed dropped from 2.3 seconds to 1.3 seconds post-TCommerce, with Order Bumps adding a measured 3.36% sales increase for adopting creators. TCommerce is currently available in the US, Canada, and the UK, with expansion to Europe and Asia-Pacific underway.

The most significant product announcement in the platform's history came on February 24, 2026, when Thinkific launched Thinker, an AI teaching assistant embedded directly in the learning interface. Thinker draws from each creator's proprietary course content (video, text, and media) to answer learner questions 24/7 with contextually accurate, brand-consistent responses. Thinkific stated explicitly that customer content is not used to train underlying language models, which matters for creators with sensitive or proprietary material. Thinker is included in Thinkific Plus plans and operates on a credit model.

"[Thinker helps] us amplify the learner experience, supporting learning that's more effective, more relatable, and more memorable at a scale we simply couldn't achieve manually." - Stephen Ekstrom, CEO of Learn Tourism, Thinkific press release, February 2026

Where Thinkific sits versus Kajabi and Teachable

The three platforms that dominate creator-side course hosting are Thinkific, Kajabi, and Teachable. They share a surface similarity (host a course, sell it, track students) but diverge sharply in philosophy and mechanical architecture.

Kajabi is an all-in-one stack that bundles course hosting with a full email marketing automation system, visual funnel builder, landing page editor, podcast hosting, community platform, and affiliate management, all included from $179/mo. Kajabi's defining architectural choice is bundling: you do not need external tools for marketing. The tradeoff is cost and rigidity. In Kajabi, each lesson supports only one video or audio file; quizzes require a separate lesson unit. Thinkific's course structure is more flexible (12 content types per lesson), and its starting price is considerably lower at $36/mo, but Thinkific creators who want email sequences, funnels, or advanced marketing automation must integrate external tools like ConvertKit, Mailchimp, or HubSpot.

Teachable targets individual creators looking for the simplest path to a first paid course. Teachable's Basic plan charges a 5% transaction fee, which Thinkific eliminates on all paid plans when using TCommerce. Teachable does not offer SCORM support, which removes it from any corporate training consideration. Quiz and assignment tooling on Teachable is more basic than Thinkific's, and Teachable has no community product comparable to Thinkific's integrated spaces. For creators who need more than a simple course storefront, Thinkific's feature depth generally surpasses Teachable at equivalent price points. Teachable does still retain a free plan tier (with transaction fees), which Thinkific eliminated in 2025.

The short version: Kajabi wins if you want everything in one tool and can absorb the higher price. Teachable wins for simplicity and the free entry point. Thinkific sits in the middle: more flexible and feature-complete than Teachable, more affordable and course-focused than Kajabi, with a better native payments system than either when TCommerce is available in your country.

For deeper learning management comparisons, Thinkific users frequently also evaluate LearnWorlds, which offers more interactive video tooling, and Notion AI as a lightweight content-planning complement before moving into a full LMS.

How AI actually works inside Thinkific

Thinkific's AI story has two distinct eras. Before December 2024, most of what the platform branded as "AI tools" were standalone generators on the marketing website (business name generators, course idea generators, social post creators) with no integration into the course builder itself. Critics noted these offered roughly the same output as a well-prompted ChatGPT session.

The December 17, 2024 deployment changed the architecture. AI is now woven into the creator workflow at specific friction points rather than offered as isolated standalone tools:

  • AI Course Outline Generator: Takes a topic or course concept as input, returns a structured module-and-lesson outline. Saves the initial planning step that often blocks first-time course creators from starting.

  • AI Quiz Generator: Reads existing text lessons (videos require closed captions to be included) and auto-generates multiple-choice questions. Available on all paid plans.

  • AI Course Landing Page Generator: Single prompt produces a full course sales page with headline, section copy, and CTA structure.

  • AI Copy Co-Pilot: Embedded editor assistance for tone, SEO optimization, and content rewriting throughout the platform.

  • Thinker (Plus only, launched February 2026): Ingests all course content and answers learner questions within the course interface. Runs on a credit model included with Plus plans.

The honest assessment: the AI tools are genuinely useful for reducing the startup friction of course creation, particularly the outline and quiz generators. They are not deep AI capabilities that redefine the product. For creators already comfortable with tools like Quizlet's AI quiz features or Notion AI for content drafting, these features are incremental improvements to the Thinkific workflow rather than reasons to switch. Thinker is the most substantive AI addition because it affects learner experience at scale, not just creator convenience.

"The platform gave me flexibility in structuring content, strong analytics to track learner progress, and reliable integrations." - Melina S., Capterra review, September 23, 2025

The friction users keep raising

Thinkific's Trustpilot score sits at 2.3-2.5 out of 5 from roughly 840 reviews, the lowest among major course platforms. Capterra (205 reviews) gives it 4.4/5. The divergence is real: power users with active courses rate it well; users who hit billing, support, or account issues rate it poorly. The recurring patterns:

Account and billing disputes. Multiple 2025 and 2026 Trustpilot reviews document charges continuing after cancellation, accounts suspended without explanation mid-pre-sale, and funds held for extended periods. One high-volume creator reportedly had over 90 days of funds held. These are severe complaints for a platform handling payment processing.

Free plan removal. Thinkific discontinued its free plan in 2025, replacing it with a 14-day trial. The free plan had been a flagship differentiator for years, and its removal prompted significant community pushback. Teachable still maintains a free entry tier.

Analytics locked behind higher tiers. Full analytics are only available on the Grow plan ($146/mo annual). Basic and Start creators get limited reporting, which makes it hard to optimize courses on lower-budget plans.

Community product depth. Thinkific's built-in community lacks post notifications, engagement gamification, and moderation depth. Users who want community as a primary product consistently find Skool or Kajabi Communities more capable.

Progress tracking edge case. Video completion only registers when the student clicks "continue." Students who close the browser before clicking are logged as incomplete, generating false data in completion reporting.

Feature request neglect. Forum threads document multi-year-old feature requests (bulk student enrollment, coaching scheduling integration, advanced SEO tools) that remain unaddressed. The platform's roadmap prioritizes enterprise features and AI additions over long-standing SMB requests.

TCommerce geographic restrictions. Integrated payments with full TCommerce features require being in the US, Canada, or UK. International creators must use Stripe as a secondary integration, losing some of the TCommerce-specific conversion tools.

Who Thinkific is for

Thinkific fits a specific creator archetype well: someone building a structured knowledge business around a multi-module course product, who wants no transaction fees, needs integrated payment management, and prefers a dedicated LMS over a general website builder. The sweet spot is a creator who has validated their course concept and is ready to invest $36-$73/mo to get a professional, reliable delivery platform.

Corporate training teams and education businesses at scale belong on Thinkific Plus. The SCORM import, SSO, learning paths, and the Thinker AI assistant (which answers employee questions about compliance content 24/7) make Plus a credible enterprise LMS for teams that cannot afford custom-built solutions.

Thinkific is a natural pairing with external tools: Coursera for learners who want institutional credentials (Thinkific targets the creator-delivered side of the market), and Forms App for course intake surveys or pre-assessment workflows that Thinkific's native forms cannot cover.

Skip Thinkific when:

  • You need deep email marketing automation natively, without third-party integrations. Kajabi is built for this.

  • Community is your primary product, not a supplement. Skool's flat $99/mo and gamification mechanics outperform Thinkific's community at that price point.

  • You need a permanent free hosting option with no trial clock. Teachable still offers this.

  • You are outside the US, Canada, or UK and want TCommerce's full payment suite. The integrated checkout benefits do not apply until your country is added to TCommerce's expansion list.

  • You are building a consumer learning marketplace rather than a branded course business. Coursera for Business or other marketplace models serve that use case differently.
